In the decade following the end of the Second World War, approximately 12,000 Mennonites immigrated to Canada and Paraguay from the Soviet Union and eastern Europe. A distinguishing characteristic of this migrant group was a high proportion of female-headed families as well as a general sex imbalance of women over men due to male losses under the Stalin regime and during the war itself.
